Rhys under the spotlight
We posed some questions to Rhys at the end of the 2017 season.
What age did you do your first triathlon? 10 years old, seems like a lifetime ago.
After 7 years racing in triathlon what would be your favorite pre-race meal (morning or evening before)? mum makes a wicked Spaghetti Carbonara, superb pre-race food.
Is there a particular pre-race ritual (habits/routine) you like to follow? Headphones on and jamming out to house music...very loud.
Coach BB looks after your training program what is the most enjoyable training session you do + why? I love the pacing swim sets, it’s a great feeling when you get the pace spot on, and generally if you get the pace right you can manage the intensity and then you feel in control.
If that's the most enjoyable what is your least enjoyable training session + why? I hate turbo bike sessions, 1 min max effort, 30 seconds recovery!! you go as hard as possible for 1min, and then 30secs rest, by the time you have found your legs after the 30sec rest the legs are being destroyed all over again, the 30 seconds rest intervals go in the a blink of an eye.
Over the years you have competed in many races which is your most enjoyable race + why ? I had a great race at the Thorpe Park age group European Qualifiers, it felt as though everything I had been working on came together and it just made me happy to see what I really can do, it is a fantastic feeling when the hard work in training is reflected on race day.
What would be you most memorable triathlon experience + why? Crashing at Strath Clyde, even though I don’t remember a lot as I knocked myself out!! it really made me realise how important it is to practice the little things like mounting the bike because it’s not as straight forward as we think it is Coach BB always tells us, do the small things well, in any training session a chance to practice a small elements of the triathlon processes arise, never miss an opportunity to practice.
When you started your triathlon journey if you had to give yourself one piece of race advise what would it be? Never lose your head when something goes wrong. I’ve done it many a time and it ruins your achievement, take the positives from every race because there will always be some, and just make the best out of a bad situation and use the problem as fire to prompt you for the rest of the race or even the next one.
What is the biggest buzz you get from triathlon? Best feeling is getting off the bike and having your legs with you and not having to find them and you run away from your competition or catch them up it’s the best feeling in the world because you feel like you could keep going as hard as you can as long as your getting away or to them.
